RE: [exelist] Code injection
Latigo,
Here is my situation...
We want to produce demo cd's of our software. Our software was built on top
of another vendor's software under license. I can fully protect our code
since we have the source. However, some of the supporting files are merely
re-branded versions from the OEM Vendor. These are the exe's that I don't
have the code for. Software like CryptKey and TimeLock are capable of
locking precompiled exe files. However, after careful review, their
unlocking mechanisms do not meet our needs. We generate our own serial
numbers wich we use to lock InstallShield on our software's cds. I am
wanting to incorporate these serial numbers as a method of locking and
unlocking the code when in demo mode. We need to be able to set the trials
for 30 days or 6 months, depending on which customer we give the demos to.
Then, we need to be able to re-extend the trial for another 30 days or 6
months. We also need the ability to totally unlock the software when they
decide to purchase. I have found enough information on patching and PE
header files on the internet to do it manually. I have a solid assembly
background and used to hack dos com and exes. I just need to approach it
differently now. Thanks for your help!
Tony

Subject: [exelist] Code injection
Hi Tony
I'm afraid you'll need a solid knowledge about the PE header and ASM for
code injection.
I have never done such a thing in a high level language since (thanks god)
ASM is my 'primary' lang.
If you know little about debugging, asm and other low level issues i think
this could be the right moment to begin :).
I don't know of any tool that will allow you to insert code automatically in
a given exe file; which doesn't mean it dont exist.
The best solution is to roll up your sleeves and do ti yourself.
Bye and hope it helps.
Latigo
Ps: There are excellent tutorials about code appending to exe files. One
that comes to mind is written by a guy called 'Amante4'
and you can get it at www.id2k.cjb.net
Bye!
