[exelist] Re: Which PE compressor/protector?
Hi,
Thank you all for your help. I tried the three PE packers you talked
about (UPX v0.62, PE-Pack v1.0 and ASPack v1.07b) packing the executable
modules from one of our applications. This one takes:
- 5 Borland Delphi v4.03 32 bit BPL (DLL) files
- 4 Borland Delphi v4.03 32 bit DLL files
- 2 Borland Delphi v4.03 32 bit EXE files
- 1 Microsoft Visual C++ 32 bit DLL file
The results:
- Although UPX v0.62 claims to be able to pack Windows 32bit DLL, I
couldn't pack none of the above, I could pack only the EXE files.
- PE-Pack could pack all the files, except the MSVC++ DLL. It got the
best compression, but none of the compressed modules could work after
packing. May be this could be one of those rare cases where PE-Pack
doesn't work, as you ANAKiN pointed in your mail. I tried it at home
with my own programs and always worked fine, I don't know where could be
the problem.
- ASPack packed all the files, except the MSVC++ 32bit DLL. Worse
compression ratios than PE-Pack in all cases, but all of the modules
packed with it could run with no problems after packing.
The decision:

I think you're right, but you can't tell that to your boss. I got
problems trying to explain them that a 50$ shareware program can be
better than a 2500$ commercial program, how could I explain them that
the best PE packer available is free, and has been coded by a cracker?
I do my best, but they can't change so quickly. So, I'll ask my boss
to register ASPack, but for personal use I'll continue using tools coded
by crackers ;). May be some day I could send my own PE code to this
list ...
Thanks again,
Aitor.
